Colchester Borough Police Force was formed on 25th February 1836 and was in existence for 111 years until its amalgamation with Essex County Constabulary on 1st April 1947. When the force was formed there were 20 officers for a population of 16,167. By the time of the amalgamation there were 63 officers for a population of 57,449.
A river police section was formed in 1890 to patrol canals and navigable rivers to order to prevent thefts from the oyster beds.
The model bears the crest of the Colchester Borough Police Force.
Constable Steve Wynn of the Essex Police Force has commissioned this model to raise money for the Essex Police Memorial Fund.
